Fire and Ice Hatch Day: Smoochum, Magby and a Shot at Shiny Larvesta

Pokémon GO’s Fire and Ice Hatch Day runs Saturday, August 8, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. local time, giving trainers a focused six-hour window to clear out their Egg inventory with better-than-usual odds and rewards.

Smoochum and Magby — the baby forms of Jynx and Magmar — hatch far more frequently than usual from 2 km Eggs during the event, with a boosted chance of hatching their Shiny forms. If you’ve been holding onto Shiny Smoochum or Shiny Magby as a Pokédex gap, this is the best window you’ve had in a while to close it.

There’s also a secondary highlight: a chance to hatch Larvesta from 5 km Eggs. Larvesta is normally a fairly rare hatch outside of dedicated events, so if you’ve got 5 km Eggs sitting in your inventory, incubating them during this window is worth the stardust.

Event bonuses

• Egg Hatch Distance reduced by 50% — a 5 km Egg effectively only needs 2.5 km of walking (or Adventure Sync distance) to hatch.
• 2× Candy from hatches — every Egg that hatches during the window rewards double the usual candy.
• More frequent 2 km Egg drops from spinning PokéStops and Gyms, specifically to feed the Smoochum/Magby hunt.

Free and paid Timed Research

A free Timed Research line rewards an Egg Incubator and bonus XP for anyone who logs in and completes a handful of simple tasks. A separate $1.99 (or local equivalent) paid research line is also available for players who want additional rewards on top of the free track. Neither is required to benefit from the core hatch bonuses.

How to make the most of six hours

• Pre-load your Egg inventory the night before. Spin extra stops in the days leading up to August 8 so you walk into the event with a full 9 (or 12, with the upgraded incubator) Eggs already queued, including as many 5 km Eggs as you can hold for the Larvesta chance.
• Use an unlimited incubator and any Super Incubators you’re saving. With hatch distance halved, this is one of the most efficient windows all month to burn through a stockpile of Incubators.
• Drive or bike carefully if you’re covering distance passively. Adventure Sync distance counts toward hatching, but always prioritize safety over squeezing out one more hatch.
• Don’t forget to check every hatch for shiny sparkles — with the boosted rate, it’s easy to hatch a shiny in a batch and miss it if you’re multitasking.

Because this is a short, single-day event rather than a week-long one, treat it as a dedicated grinding session rather than something to casually check in on between other tasks.

Why Hatch Days exist

Eggs are one of the few Pokémon GO mechanics that reward consistent, passive play over active grinding — you earn progress just by walking (or using Adventure Sync) with no need to be actively engaged with the app. Hatch Day events exist to give that slower system an occasional burst of relevance, concentrating rare hatches and better rates into a short window so players who’ve been quietly accumulating Eggs get a payoff day. If you’re new to the game and haven’t been hoarding Eggs, this is also a good signal to start: keep your Egg inventory full heading into any announced Hatch Day rather than incubating them evenly throughout the month.

Buddy Adventure distance also counts

If you use the Buddy Adventure feature, distance walked with your buddy Pokémon contributes to Egg hatching the same way ordinary walking does, and buddy-specific bonuses (like the chance for your buddy to find items) remain active during the event on top of the Hatch Day bonuses. There’s no conflict between running a buddy and hatching Eggs simultaneously, so there’s no reason to disable one to prioritize the other during the event.

What if I don’t get a shiny?

Even with a boosted rate, shiny Pokémon remain a probability-based event, not a guarantee. If you hatch through your full stock of Eggs during the window without a Shiny Smoochum, Magby or Larvesta, don’t assume something’s wrong — a 1-in-several-hundred boosted rate still means most players who hatch a modest number of Eggs won’t see one. The best way to improve your odds within the event window is simply to hatch as many Eggs as your Incubator capacity allows, since each hatch is an independent roll.

After the event ends

Once Fire and Ice Hatch Day concludes at 5:00 p.m., hatch rates and distances return to normal immediately. Any Eggs still incubating past that point will finish at the standard (non-halved) distance, so it’s worth timing your Incubator usage so your active Eggs are likely to hatch before the window closes rather than carrying over into normal rates.

Should you save Star Pieces and Lucky Eggs for this event?

Since hatching rewards a flat amount of Stardust per Egg regardless of distance, and Hatch Day roughly doubles your hatch throughput by halving distance requirements, this is a genuinely efficient window to burn a Star Piece (which boosts Stardust earned from all sources by 50% for 30 minutes) if you’ve been saving one. A Lucky Egg, which doubles XP for 30 minutes, is less directly synergistic with hatching alone, but pairs well if you’re also planning to catch or evolve Pokémon during the same session.
