Eggs are one of the most reliable ways to get strong Pokemon in Pokemon GO, since hatches come with a better average IV floor than wild catches and occasionally include species that don’t spawn in the wild at all. Here’s how the distance tiers work and which Eggs are worth prioritizing.
How Egg distance tiers work
Eggs come in distance tiers — typically 2 km, 5 km, 7 km (from gifts), 10 km, and rarer 12 km strategic or event Eggs — and the distance tier broadly correlates with how rare or strong the species pool inside it is. Walking the required distance with the Egg incubating (using either your free standard Incubator or a Super Incubator, which hatches distance faster) is the only way to hatch it; there’s no way to skip the distance requirement.
Why hatches tend to have better stats
Hatched Pokemon have a noticeably better IV floor on average compared to wild catches, since Pokémon from Eggs are guaranteed at least 10 in each IV stat (a 10/10/10 floor). This is part of why Egg hatching is a recommended strategy specifically for finding usable PvP or raid-relevant Pokemon of a species that’s otherwise hard to find with good stats in the wild.
Which Eggs to prioritize
Longer-distance Eggs generally hold rarer species, but the exact pool rotates periodically, so it’s worth checking your current Egg pool in-game before deciding which ones to burn Incubators on. As a general rule, 10 km and 12 km Eggs are worth prioritizing with Super Incubators or events that cut the hatch distance specifically because they’re the tiers most likely to contain a species you can’t easily catch in the wild.
Incubators — regular vs Super
A regular Incubator has unlimited uses but hatches distance at the normal rate, while a Super Incubator hatches distance noticeably faster but has a limited number of uses before it’s consumed. Save Super Incubators for your longest-distance, most valuable Eggs rather than using them on 2 km Eggs, since the time saved matters far more on a 10 km or 12 km Egg than a short one.
Egg-hatch events
Niantic periodically runs Egg-focused events that temporarily add specific species to the Egg pool, boost hatch rates for certain distances, or grant free Eggs through Field Research — these are usually the best windows to stock up on Incubators and burn through your Egg backlog, since the pool during these events is often better than the default rotation.
Egg pool boosts like the current Fire and Ice Hatch Day event are exactly when this guide pays off most — rarer hatches and better odds for a limited window.

Where Every Egg Type Comes From
Here is how each type is obtained.

Egg storage
Niantic’s help center refers to a 12-Egg limit: nine regular slots plus three Bonus Storage slots reserved for Adventure Sync and Team GO Rocket Leader Eggs. Per esports.gg, 7 km Eggs cannot use Bonus Storage, and the Daily Adventure Egg does not count against storage.
Incubators Explained
An Incubator holds one Egg at a time, and an Egg only progresses while it is incubated.

With a Super Incubator, a 10 km Egg needs roughly 6.7 km and a 12 km Egg needs 8 km. That is why they belong on your longest Eggs. Hatch Day Timed Research can also reward Incubators.
Adventure Sync Weekly Rewards
Adventure Sync counts your walking even when the game is closed. Without it, the app must stay open. Rewards are claimed every Monday at 9:00 a.m. local time, and each tier includes the tiers below it.

Stardust and ball amounts have been changed over the years, so check the in-game weekly summary for current numbers. An Egg reward is lost if you have no free Egg slot, so clear one before Monday.
How to Hatch More Efficiently
- Keep every Incubator busy.
- Put Super Incubators on 10 km and 12 km Eggs where the one-third saving is largest.
- Walk, do not ride. The game ignores distance travelled at vehicle speeds.
- Buddy walking is a separate system. It earns Candy at a per-species distance that no longer matches Egg distance. Use our Buddy Distance tool.
- Remember the Egg’s species is set when you receive it. Pool changes only affect Eggs you collect afterwards.
Event Bonus Patterns
Hatch Days follow a consistent pattern. Sandile Hatch Day (Saturday, October 17, 2026, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. local time) lists 1/2 Egg Hatch Distance, 2x Candy from hatching, an increased chance of Shiny Sandile and more 2 km Eggs from PokéStops. The paid Timed Research ticket adds a further 1/4 hatch distance, but Niantic notes these bonuses do not stack with other events or GO Passes. Shiny, Regional and Rare Hatches
Niantic has not published a general Shiny rate for Eggs, so treat any figure you see as unconfirmed. Hatch Days do officially raise the Shiny chance for their featured Pokémon. Step-by-Step Hatching Plan
- Step 1: Turn on Adventure Sync.
- Step 2: Fill your slots from PokéStops and Gyms, and open friend Gifts for 7 km Eggs.
- Step 3: Put your unlimited Incubator on a 2 km or 5 km Egg and any limited Incubators on the next ones.
- Step 4: Reserve Super Incubators for 10 km and 12 km Eggs.
- Step 5: Before a Hatch Day, hold Incubators and make room for new Eggs.
- Step 6: Claim your Monday reward and use the Egg Chart to decide which Eggs to prioritise.

Do I need to keep Pokémon GO open while walking?
Not with Adventure Sync enabled. Without it, the app must stay open.
Can I get 7 km Eggs by spinning PokéStops?
No. They come from friend Gifts and from Mateo’s Route gift exchange.
Why did my Strange Egg or weekly reward Egg not arrive?
You need free Egg storage when it is awarded, so check your slots first.
