Update, September 6, 2026: Forever Forward ends September 8, 2026. The new season, GO Battle League: Twilight Trails, begins Tuesday, September 8 at 10:00 a.m. local time and runs through December 1, 2026, with GBL matches opening at 1:00 p.m. PDT that day. The headline change is that Mega-Evolved Pokémon are eligible in GBL for the first time (Mega Edition entries at ≤1,500 CP in Great League and ≤2,500 CP in Ultra League, plus Mega Edition entries in Master League). Niantic has not yet published Twilight Trails’ rank-up encounters, avatar reward track, or weekly bonus days — the season-specific details below still describe the outgoing Forever Forward season and will be updated once Twilight Trails’ own rewards are confirmed.

Climbing the GO Battle League ladder pays out more than just Stardust — rank-up rewards, Research Breakthrough-style battle pages, and encounter rewards all stack up if you know what to expect at each stage.

How GBL Rewards Are Structured

Each GO Battle League season runs its own rank track from Rank 1 up through Legend, and reaching a new rank for the first time in a season triggers a one-time reward — typically a mix of Stardust, items, and occasionally a guaranteed Pokémon encounter. Higher ranks (Ace and above) also unlock cosmetic rewards like avatar items and battle-themed poses.

Battle Research Pages

Alongside rank rewards, every season includes a set of battle-count research pages — completing a set number of battles and wins (historically around 100 battles and 50 wins per page) awards a bundle of Stardust and useful items, which has included Rare Candy XL and Elite TMs in past seasons. These pages reset each new season, so it’s worth chipping away at them throughout the season rather than saving battles for the end.

Encounter Rewards

Certain ranks guarantee a Pokémon encounter once per season, and these occasionally appear as their Shiny form. From Rank 20 onward, encounter rewards can also pull from whichever Pokémon are currently appearing in 5-star raids, effectively giving you a free shot at the current raid meta just for battling.

Should You Push for Legend Rank?

Pushing to Legend rank is a genuine grind and mostly rewards bragging rights, leaderboard placement, and a distinct avatar pose rather than a huge gear advantage — Ace rank and the mid-tier ranks below it already unlock most of the meaningful item and Stardust rewards. If your goal is just to clear the season’s research pages and rank rewards efficiently, focus on winning consistently at whichever rank feels comfortable rather than grinding for the absolute top.

For team-building help at any rank, our Great League Meta Report, Ultra League Meta Report, and Master League Meta Report all break down the current top picks for each format.

Inside the Current Season: GO Battle League Forever Forward

The season currently running, GO Battle League: Forever Forward, covers June 2 through September 8, 2026, rotating through a new league or Cup roughly every week rather than splitting the season into separate multi-week Sets the way older seasons did. Ranks reset once, at the start of the season, and every reward described above resets alongside it.

This season’s avatar reward track is themed around Cynthia, the Sinnoh Champion: Rank 10 unlocks a pair of shoes, Rank 15 a hair accessory, Rank 20 a pair of pants, Ace rank a jacket, and Legend rank an exclusive battle pose. None of these affect gameplay, but they’re a nice marker of progress if you’re grinding ranks anyway.

Guaranteed and Standard Rank-Up Encounters

This season’s guaranteed encounters — available once each, at set ranks, with a chance of a Shiny — include Gabite, Lucario, Honedge, Dreepy, and Pikachu Libre. Standard reward encounters, which can show up repeatedly at various ranks throughout the season, currently rotate through Pokémon including Mankey, Lickitung, Marill, Swablu, Inkay, Alolan Vulpix, Lileep, Togetic, Gible, Frillish, Galarian Stunfisk, Galarian Weezing, Galarian Corsola, Morpeko, Dratini, Goomy, and Frigibax — on top of the Rank 20+ current-raid-boss encounter mentioned above.

GO Battle Thursday

Thursdays get their own bonus this season: the daily set limit rises from five sets to ten (50 battles instead of 25), and every win earns 4× Stardust from win rewards — though that multiplier doesn’t extend to end-of-set rewards. If you’re trying to clear the Timed Research pages below quickly, Thursday is the day to stack battles.

The Free Timed Research Pass, in Detail

The battle-themed Timed Research pass is free from the in-game shop once the season begins. Its first page asks you to catch Pokémon and rewards team-building encounters; every page after that requires 100 battles and 50 wins, paying out Stardust plus items like Rare Candy XL, an Elite Fast TM, and an Elite Charged TM each time you clear one. Because the requirement is battles and wins rather than a specific league, any Set you’re already playing counts toward it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do rank rewards carry over if I miss a Set?

Yes — rank progress and rank-up rewards are tracked for the whole season, not per Set, so skipping a week’s league or Cup doesn’t cost you any rank-based rewards you’ve already unlocked.

Is it worth playing a Cup I don’t have a team for?

Only if you enjoy the format. Rank rewards and the Timed Research pass count wins from any Set, so there’s no reward penalty for skipping a Cup you’re not built for and waiting for a league you have a stronger roster in.

Does the current raid boss encounter at Rank 20+ change during the season?

Yes — it tracks whatever Pokémon or Ultra Beast is currently active in 5-star raids, so it rotates every time the raid rotation changes.
