The Ultra League ladder plays very differently from Great League — the extra 1,000 CP of headroom opens the door to bulkier attackers, wider movesets, and a handful of Legendaries that would be overpowered at the 1500 CP cap. Here’s a snapshot of who’s currently defining the 2500 CP format, and why each of them earned that spot.
Cresselia — the format’s defensive backbone

Cresselia’s mix of huge Defense and Stamina stats lets it soak up hits from nearly the entire Ultra League field while chipping away with Psycho Cut and a flexible Charged Move pairing. It rarely wins fast, but it’s exceptionally hard to knock out before it’s dealt real damage, which makes it one of the safest anchors to build a team around.
Registeel — nearly unkillable, if a little passive

Registeel brings some of the best raw bulk in the format, and its Steel typing resists a huge share of common Ultra League attacks. The tradeoff is limited offensive pressure — it’s built to stall and bait shields rather than close out fights quickly, so it performs best paired with faster attackers that can capitalize once the shields are gone.
Talonflame — fast pressure with real bite

Talonflame’s high Attack stat and access to Incinerate, one of the fastest energy-generating Fast Moves in the game, let it apply pressure almost immediately after switching in. Brave Bird hits hard against anything that doesn’t resist Flying, and its Fire/Flying typing gives it useful resistances against the Fighting, Grass, and Bug-type attackers common at this CP range.
Walrein — bulky Water/Ice coverage
Walrein’s stats do a lot of quiet work at this CP range: it’s tanky enough to absorb neutral hits from most of the format, while Powder Snow and Icicle Spear provide reliable coverage against the Dragon and Flying-types that give many Ultra League teams trouble.
Also worth building: Trevenant, Poliwrath and Skarmory
Rounding out the current top picks, these three each solve a specific problem rather than being universal answers: Trevenant punishes Water and Psychic-types leaning on special attacks, Poliwrath’s Fighting/Water typing gives it an unusually wide resistance profile, and Skarmory’s near-total immunity to physical chip damage makes it one of the most frustrating walls to break down in the format.
What the extra CP room changes
Moving from 1500 to 2500 CP doesn’t just mean bigger numbers — it fundamentally changes which Pokémon are viable. Species that get capped out and underused at Great League’s CP limit often find their natural stat spread far better suited to Ultra League. It’s worth re-checking a Pokémon’s Ultra League ranking even if you already dismissed it for Great League — see our Great League Meta Report for the 1500 CP equivalent of this list.
Building your own team
The same core principle from Great League still applies: avoid stacking three Pokémon that all share the same weakness. A strong Ultra League roster usually pairs one heavy-bulk wall (Registeel or Skarmory), one fast-pressure attacker (Talonflame), and one flexible coverage pick (Cresselia or Walrein) that can step in against whatever the wall can’t handle.
Shields still decide close matches
The shield-baiting fundamentals from Great League carry over directly to Ultra League — each player still gets two Protect Shields, and reading when to bait one out with a cheap Charged Attack before unloading your real damage is still the single biggest skill gap between ranks. The higher CP cap does mean fights tend to run a little longer on average, giving you more opportunities to read your opponent’s shield count before committing.
How the Ultra League meta shifts
Ultra League sees less churn than Great League overall, since fewer new Community Day exclusives land exactly in the 2500 CP sweet spot. Most shifts come from newly released Legendaries and Mythicals that happen to fall in the right CP range, or from balance changes to existing moves. Limited-time Ultra League cups with restricted rulesets can also temporarily shake up what’s viable outside the open ladder.
A note for brand-new Ultra League players
If Great League already feels like a lot to track, know that Ultra League rewards the same fundamentals rather than requiring an entirely new skill set. Focus on building one solid, well-typed team before worrying about optimizing IVs for a specific meta pick — see our IVs Explained guide if you’re not sure which IV spread actually matters for a PvP-capped format like this one.
