Shiny Pokemon are purely cosmetic — an alternate color scheme with no stat difference from a normal Pokemon — but they’re one of the most collected features in the game precisely because most of them are genuinely rare to find. Here’s how the odds actually work and where to focus if you’re hunting for one.
Base shiny odds in the wild
Most species have a low base shiny rate in normal wild spawns, meaning you can reasonably expect to check hundreds of a common species before finding a shiny through pure luck alone. This rate isn’t publicly documented by Niantic with exact numbers, but community data-mining and large-scale tracking consistently point to it being low enough that dedicated shiny hunters rarely rely on wild spawns alone for anything but the most common species.
Why Community Day is the best time to hunt
Community Day features a drastically increased shiny rate for that day’s featured species, on top of a large spike in spawn density — the combination is why most players’ collections are dominated by Community Day shinies rather than ones found during normal play. If there’s a specific species you want in shiny form, checking whether it has a Community Day scheduled (or has had one previously that you missed) is usually a better plan than grinding wild spawns.
Raids, eggs, and research encounters
Shiny rates are also boosted in raids for many boss rotations, in Eggs for select species during specific promotions, and in guaranteed-encounter Field Research or Special Research rewards, though not every boss or task offers a boosted rate — it varies by event and is usually confirmed in official patch notes rather than being a permanent flat rate across the board. Species that can’t be shiny (yet)
Not every Pokemon has a shiny form released — Niantic adds shiny availability species by species over time, often timed to a relevant event, rather than releasing every shiny at once. If you’ve checked dozens of a species with no luck, it’s worth confirming that species even has a shiny form live in the game before assuming you’ve just had bad luck.
Tips for more efficient shiny hunting
Stack sessions around Community Day, event spawn bonuses, and Incense during a spawn-boosted event rather than hunting during ordinary hours. Using an Incense during a Community Day or a spawn-heavy event multiplies your effective catch rate per hour spent, which matters more for shiny hunting than almost any other strategy since it’s fundamentally a numbers game. Keeping a running checklist of which shinies you’ve already caught also helps avoid wasted effort re-checking species you’ve already secured.
