Leveling up in Pokemon GO gets slower the higher you climb, but a handful of habits make a real difference in how fast your XP bar fills. None of this requires spending money — it’s mostly about which actions you prioritize and when you stack your bonuses.

The XP sources that actually add up

Catching Pokemon gives a small base amount of XP, but Excellent throws, Curveballs, and first-catch-of-the-day bonuses each add their own separate bonus on top, so a well-thrown Excellent Curveball on a new-for-the-day species can be worth several times a plain catch. Evolving Pokemon gives a flat, larger chunk of XP per evolution regardless of species, which is why evolution chains are the backbone of most XP grinding. Completing raids, especially with a full group, and finishing Field Research tasks both give meaningful XP as well, particularly the weekly Research Breakthrough.

Evolving for XP — the classic grind

Low-candy-cost Pokemon with three-stage evolution lines are the standard XP farming target, because you can burn through a large stack of candy quickly and each evolution triggers its own XP bonus. Species like Weedle, Caterpie, and Magikarp are popular specifically because their candy requirements are low and they’re common enough to stockpile in bulk before a planned evolution session.

Lucky Eggs — doubling everything for 30 minutes

A Lucky Egg doubles all XP earned for 30 minutes, which is why serious XP grinding sessions are built around stacking a Lucky Egg with a big batch of saved-up evolutions, raids, or catches. Since the bonus applies to every source of XP at once, the most efficient use is lining up as many evolutions and catches as possible before activating it, rather than using it passively during normal play.

A common point of confusion: Star Pieces don’t affect XP

Star Pieces boost Stardust earned from catches, not XP — it’s an easy mix-up since both items work the same way mechanically (a timed multiplier), but they stack with completely different resources. If your goal is specifically XP, a Lucky Egg is the item that matters; save Star Pieces for sessions where Stardust is the priority instead.

Community Day and event bonuses

Community Day events typically include a 2x or 3x catch XP bonus for the featured species, on top of increased spawn rates, which makes them one of the most efficient windows in the game for leveling up quickly. Many other live events layer in similar temporary XP bonuses, so it’s worth checking the current event bonuses before planning a dedicated grinding session.

What changes after level 40

Leveling past 40 requires completing specific milestone challenges rather than just accumulating XP passively — things like catching a certain number of a given type, winning raids, or completing themed Field Research sets. The XP requirements per level also increase substantially compared to the early game, so post-40 progress is intentionally slower and more about long-term, varied play than pure grinding.
