Ultra Unlock: Water Festival Guide — Arrokuda, Barraskewda and Cramorant Debut
Pokémon GO’s Ultra Unlock: Water Festival runs from Tuesday, August 18 at 10:00 a.m. to Monday, August 24 at 8:00 p.m. local time, and it’s one of the bigger content drops of the month: three brand-new species make their Pokémon GO debut, on top of a raid rotation stacked with Water-type favorites.
Why “Ultra Unlock”?
This event is a reward tier unlocked by the community collectively completing Global Challenges during Pokémon GO Fest 2026: Global. Reaching the threshold guaranteed this Water-themed follow-up event for every player, whether or not you personally took part in GO Fest.
New debuts: Arrokuda, Barraskewda and Cramorant
All three Galar-region Water-types become catchable for the first time:
- Arrokuda — available through Field Research task rewards, by using Rainy Lure Modules, or by progressing through the event’s GO Pass.
- Barraskewda — Arrokuda’s evolution; expect it to be catchable directly in some capacity as the event progresses, alongside the standard candy-evolution route.
- Cramorant — obtainable from Eggs, through GO Pass progression, or as a GO Battle League set reward.
Arrokuda’s kit is built around Water/Flying-adjacent utility rather than raw power, so don’t expect it to reshape any meta — but “new species” events are still worth playing through for the Pokédex entry and the guaranteed shiny hunt that usually follows a few months later.
Raid rotation
One-star raids feature regional variants of Tatsugiri (Curly Form in Europe/Middle East/Africa, Droopy Form in the Americas, Stretchy Form in Asia-Pacific) alongside a costumed Psyduck wearing a swim ring. Three-star raids bring back Lapras in a scarf, Hisuian Samurott, and Dondozo, all with a shiny chance attached.
Escalating XP bonuses
Water Festival uses a staggered bonus structure rather than one flat multiplier for the whole week:
- August 18: 2× XP for catching Pokémon
- August 20: 3× XP for catching Pokémon
- August 22: 4× XP for catching Pokémon
If you’re close to a level milestone (or chasing the level 50/51 grind for XL Candy purposes), plan a catching session specifically around August 22 rather than spreading your play evenly across the week.
GO Pass and GO Pass Deluxe
Both the free GO Pass and the paid GO Pass Deluxe are active for the full event window, from August 18 at 10:00 a.m. to August 24 at 8:00 p.m. local time. As always, the Deluxe tier adds extra encounters and items on top of the free track, but the free track alone is enough to unlock Cramorant if you play consistently through the week.
Should you prioritize this event?
If you’re a completionist chasing every new Pokédex entry, yes — three debuts in one event is generous. If you’re mainly a raid-focused or PvP-focused player, this is a lighter week: none of the raid bosses are likely to reshape the current meta, so treat it as a shiny-hunting and XP-farming week rather than a must-attend raid event.
Field Research and Timed Research overlap
Because Water Festival runs for a full week rather than a single afternoon, it overlaps with the regular weekly Field Research task rotation. Expect several Water-themed tasks to appear at PokéStops throughout the event specifically to funnel players toward Arrokuda encounters, on top of whatever the event’s own Timed Research line offers. It’s worth spinning a few extra stops each day rather than relying solely on the GO Pass track, since Field Research rewards stack independently.
Making sense of the regional Tatsugiri forms
Tatsugiri’s three cosmetic forms — Curly, Droopy and Stretchy — are tied to the region your account’s Pokémon GO profile is registered in, not to your physical location at the time of catching. If you’re traveling internationally during the event, you’ll still encounter your home region’s form in one-star raids unless you’ve changed your in-game region separately. This trips up a surprising number of trainers every time a regional-form Pokémon shows up in raids, so it’s worth knowing in advance rather than being confused mid-event.
Should you buy GO Pass Deluxe?
The free GO Pass track is enough to guarantee a Cramorant encounter if you log in and complete tasks consistently across the full week. GO Pass Deluxe adds extra item rewards and additional encounters along the same track, which mainly benefits players who are also chasing Shiny variants of the debuting species or want a faster route to evolving Barraskewda. If you’re a casual player who checks in once a day, the free track alone will comfortably get you through the event’s core rewards.
Planning around the event’s back half
Because the escalating XP bonuses peak on August 22 — which also happens to be the date of the separate Mega Starmie Super Mega Raid Day — that Saturday is shaping up to be one of the busier single days of the month. If you can only dedicate serious playtime to one day during Water Festival, August 22 offers the best combination of raid content and catching XP bonuses happening simultaneously.
