Recap: What Happened
As part of the 10th Anniversary Celebration, Niantic offered every Trainer worldwide a free Timed Research that ended in an encounter with a Mewtwo with maxed-out stats (a 100% IV, “hundo”) and a Special Background. According to the official Pokémon GO news post, it ran from Wednesday, August 12, 2026 at 4:00 p.m. PDT to Sunday, September 6, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. local time. Tasks had to be completed, and rewards claimed, before that deadline.

The task list comes from Leek Duck and Pokémon GO Hub; the official post confirms the dates, the free access, the Special Background and the unlocked Mega Level. Trainers who caught a Mewtwo at the in-person Times Square event on July 9 received a Mewtwo with different stats and rewards. Leek Duck notes they received 30 Mewtwo Candy rather than the Master Ball for the catching task.

Is the offer still available?
No. The research closed on September 6, 2026, and as of October 12, 2026 we found no announcement of an extension or rerun. If you claimed it in time, the Mewtwo is already in your storage. If you missed it, there is no confirmed way to claim it now.
What a perfect-IV Pokémon means
Each Pokémon has three hidden IVs (Attack, Defense and Stamina), each from 0 to 15. A 100% IV Pokémon is 15/15/15. Higher IVs raise CP and bulk at every level, which matters for raids and Master League. You can check any Pokémon with the IV calculator, and our IVs explained guide covers the basics. One caveat: for Great and Ultra League, the best IV spread is often not 15/15/15 because those leagues reward bulk under a CP cap. A hundo shines most where there is no CP cap.
How to evaluate Mewtwo
Pokémon GO Hub’s database lists Mewtwo as a Psychic-type with 300 Attack, 182 Defense and 214 Stamina, with a maximum CP of 4724 at level 50. It is weak to Bug, Dark and Ghost attacks and resists Fighting and Psychic.
- Raids and gyms: Pokémon GO Hub’s best moveset is Psycho Cut + Psystrike. It ranks Mewtwo among the top Psychic attackers.
- Second charged move: The same page suggests unlocking one for coverage: Shadow Ball for Ghosts, Ice Beam for Dragons, Thunderbolt for Flying and Water types. Use our type chart guide to choose.
- Master League: Pokémon GO Hub recommends Psycho Cut, Psystrike and Shadow Ball, and calls Mewtwo strong but overtaken by newer Legendaries. It rates Mewtwo as fragile in Ultra League.
- Mega Evolution: The reward Mewtwo had its third Mega Level unlocked for Mega Mewtwo Y. Check the in-game Mega screen for current energy costs, since we could not confirm figures.

Will It Return?
Niantic has not announced a rerun of this research. The only return stated in the official post is that the Times Square background Mewtwo “will be available again at some point in the future”, with no date given. Anything beyond that is speculation, so keep an eye on the event calendar for official announcements.
