It’s built entirely around Mega Evolution: a wider Mega Raid rotation, a branching Timed Research story that lets you pick a Kalos starter, and a temporary bump to the Remote Raid Pass limit so groups can clear more raids together before the weekend finale.
The event matters less for any single headline reward and more for the prep window it opens up. Whatever Mega Energy, Candy, and Mega-Raid clears you bank between August 31 and September 4 directly feed into how ready your account is for Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y when GO Fest: Mega Finale starts on September 5. Treat this as the setup phase, not a standalone event to skim.

Timed Research
The Timed Research is branching: you choose one of the three Kalos starters at the start, and that choice locks in which Mega Evolution line you’re working toward for the rest of the event. Niantic hasn’t published the individual step-by-step tasks yet, so we’re not listing fabricated steps — check back closer to or during the event window, since Timed Research tasks are typically only visible in-app once the event goes live.

Whether the Deluxe track requires a purchase hasn’t been independently confirmed by us — GO Pass tracks in past Pokémon GO events have typically had a free and a paid tier, but we’re flagging this as unconfirmed rather than stating a price.
Special encounters
The main guaranteed encounters come from the GO Pass free track (your chosen Kalos starter). Beyond that, Niantic’s own materials don’t detail a separate list of special wild or research encounters distinct from the GO Pass rewards above.
Remote Raid Pass changes
The Remote Raid Pass limit is raised to 30 for the duration of Mega Ascension (August 31–September 4). This is the detail worth planning around if you raid remotely with a group: it’s a wider window than the standard limit, but it closes before GO Fest: Mega Finale weekend, so don’t assume it carries over to September 5–6.
Event-exclusive bonuses
The Mega Evolution–themed Special Background tied to Mega Raid catches during this window is the one cosmetic exclusive confirmed so far. If you care about profile cosmetics, that’s a reason to get at least one Mega Raid catch in during the event rather than waiting for the weekend.
What to do during the event
- Pick your Kalos starter deliberately. Since the choice locks your Mega Evolution track for both Mega Ascension and GO Fest: Mega Finale, decide based on which Mega Evolution you’d actually use — Mega Sceptile, Mega Delphox, and Mega Greninja arrived at different points and offer different competitive angles (see our Mega Evolution Explained guide for how Mega Energy and re-Mega Evolving actually work if you’re new to the system).
- Bank Mega Energy for Mewtwo before September 5. The whole point of this lead-in event is to walk into GO Fest: Mega Finale with raid groups and Mega Energy sorted, not scrambling on day one.
- Use the raised Remote Raid Pass limit deliberately, not passively. If you’re not already grouped up for the Mega Latias/Latios raids, this is the window to sort that out — the limit drops back down once the event ends.
- Don’t skip the free GO Pass track even if you’re not chasing Deluxe rewards. The free track’s Mega Energy reward is enough to Mega Evolve your chosen starter once, which most players will want regardless of Deluxe status.
Which Pokémon merit priority
If you can only chase a few raids in this window: Mega Latias and Mega Latios are the ones worth prioritizing first, since they’re intermittent additions to the roster (not a guaranteed daily raid boss) and Dragon/Psychic Mega attackers hold up well against most Mega and Legendary raid bosses you’ll see later in the year. Mega Dragonite and Mega Starmie are both raid bosses with real staying power as attackers too, so they’re a reasonable second priority if your group has the raid passes to spare. Falinks, Skarmory, and Raichu Megas are more situational — worth grabbing if they’re convenient, but not worth restructuring your raid schedule around.
