Master League has no CP cap, which changes everything about how you build a team. It’s less about counting Combat Power and more about raw stats, coverage, and whether your Pokemon can take a hit from a Steel-type legendary and still swing back. Here’s a look at who’s actually winning battles right now, based on real PvPoke rankings rather than guesswork.
Metagross – the fighter that beats almost everything
Metagross sits at #3 in Master League and it’s easy to see why. A 97.9 PvPoke score puts it near the top of the format, with wins over Zacian (Crowned Sword), Dialga (Origin), Palkia (Origin), Kyurem Black and Zamazenta (Crowned Shield) – basically the Master League’s who’s-who. Shadow Claw, Meteor Mash and Earthquake give it fast pressure plus a heavy-hitting bait move, and Steel typing shrugs off a lot of the Fairy and Ice damage that punishes other top picks. Its main issue is Kyurem White, Ho-Oh, Kyogre, Landorus (Therian) and Groudon – all things that either resist Steel or hit it super effectively.
Giratina (Origin) – the ghost that walls dragons
Giratina’s Origin Forme ranks #70 in Master League with an 80.4 score, and while that’s a step below Metagross, its job on a team is different: it’s there to answer Dragon-types and anything relying on Ghost-weak coverage. It beats Necrozma (Dawn Wings), Landorus (Therian), Ho-Oh, Kyogre and Kyurem White, and Dragon Tail into Ominous Wind and Shadow Ball gives it both a fast-charging bait move and a real closer. It struggles against the same Fairy-and-Steel legendaries that give most Ghost/Dragon types trouble – Zacian (Crowned Sword), Palkia (Origin), Zamazenta (Crowned Shield), Dialga (Origin) and Kyurem Black.
Dialga – steel backbone with real bite
Dialga ranks #41 in Master League (86/100), a notch below its Origin Forme but still a legitimate pick, especially if you don’t have access to the Origin variant. Dragon Breath, Iron Head and Draco Meteor is the real PvPoke-recommended set, and Steel/Dragon typing gives it a long resistance list. It’s strongest against Ho-Oh, Kyogre, Kyurem Black and Lugia, and weakest against the same small cluster of top-tier legendaries – Zacian (Crowned Sword), Zamazenta (Crowned Shield), Kyurem White and Palkia (Origin) – that define who wins Master League right now.
What the lack of a CP cap changes
Great League and Ultra League reward Pokemon that hit a CP ceiling efficiently – you’re often choosing a slightly weaker IV spread specifically because it lands under 1500 or 2500. Master League removes that constraint entirely, so raw stat totals matter more than min-maxing. A Pokemon’s bulk and attack stat at full CP decide most of the matchup math, which is why the format is dominated by a small pool of Steel, Dragon and Fairy legendaries that simply have the best numbers in the game. If you’re used to building around the Ultra League Meta Report, the jump to Master League means thinking less about CP efficiency and more about raw type coverage.
Building your own team
A working Master League core usually needs three things: a Steel-type to eat Fairy and Ice damage, something that can pressure Dragon-types, and at least one Pokemon that isn’t just a copy of what everyone else is running, since counter-picking a predictable team is one of the easiest ways to win a set. Metagross covers the first job well. Giratina or Dialga can cover the second. The third slot is where you have the most freedom – a bulky Water or Ground-type raid Pokemon you’ve already invested in is often good enough if it has a reliable charged move.
Shields still decide close matches
Master League fights tend to run long – high HP totals and slower TDO curves mean most matches go to the wire, so shield timing matters even more here than in the lower leagues. Baiting out a shield with a cheap charged move before firing your real attack is usually worth more than switching Pokemon mid-battle.
A note for players just starting Master League
You don’t need a full box of legendaries to compete. A well-built team around whatever Steel or Dragon-resistant Pokemon you already have – even a non-legendary – will out-perform a team of undercooked legendaries with bad IVs.
