Pokémon GO’s next Battle League season, Twilight Trails, begins Tuesday, September 8, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. local time, replacing the outgoing Forever Forward season. It’s one of the bigger structural changes GO Battle League has seen in a while: for the first time, Mega-Evolved Pokémon are legal in ranked PvP.

As always, GO Battle League ranks reset at the start of the new season, and any season-specific rewards from Forever Forward stop being available once Twilight Trails begins.
The Big Change: Mega Pokémon Are Now Legal in GBL
Twilight Trails is the first season where Mega-Evolved Pokémon can be used in ranked battles. Each league has its own cap for how strong a Mega entry can be:

A “Mega Edition” entry lets you bring a Pokémon capable of Mega Evolution into a battle already Mega Evolved, without that Pokémon’s boosted CP pushing it over the league’s normal cap the way it would outside of battle. Exactly which Mega-capable species end up being strong picks at each cap will take some testing once the season is live, but this is a genuine shake-up of the Great League and Ultra League metas that have been stable for months.

Twilight Trails splits into 12 weekly sets, each flipping at 1:00 p.m. PDT. Great League only allows Mega Pokémon during the three “all-Mega” opener weeks; Ultra League runs Mega Edition most weeks; Master League alternates between its Mega and standard forms roughly every other week.

In short: if you specifically want to use Mega Pokémon in Great League, the three windows are September 8–15, October 6–13, and November 3–10. Ultra League runs Mega Edition far more often. Master League alternates between its Mega and standard form roughly every other week throughout the season.
Early Meta: What’s Actually Winning
With Mega Pokémon now legal, Mega Sableye has emerged as one of the strongest picks in Great League: Mega Edition — its Dark/Ghost typing leaves it weak only to Fairy, and it’s commonly paired with Ninetales and Tinkaton. Mega Absol and Mega Venusaur are seeing play mainly as Mega-boost support picks (extra Candy and XP from battling) rather than top-tier attackers. Outside of Megas, Snorlax (using Psywave) and Vigoroth (using Scratch) have also emerged as risers in the reshuffled meta. Expect this list to keep shifting as more Trainers unlock higher Mega Levels.
Field Research Now Mostly Season-Long
Alongside the GBL change, most Field Research tasks are expected to stay available for the entire Twilight Trails season instead of rotating on a monthly basis, which has been the norm in recent seasons. The one confirmed exception is Spinda-encounter tasks, which will keep rotating monthly as before. If you’ve gotten used to checking Field Research task lists every few weeks, Twilight Trails should need less frequent rechecking for most tasks.

Niantic hasn’t yet published Twilight Trails’ rank-up encounter pool, avatar reward track, or any weekly battle-day bonuses (the way Forever Forward had GO Battle Thursday). What to Do Before the Season Starts
- Finish any Forever Forward Timed Research or rank rewards you’re close to completing before the reset on September 8.
- If you have Mega Energy saved up for a Pokémon you were planning to use in a specific league, check whether it’s still Mega Evolved when the CP cap for that league applies — not every Mega-capable Pokémon will fit at the 1,500 or 2,500 CP caps.
