Ultra Unlock: Water Festival Guide — Arrokuda and Cramorant Debut in Pokémon GO

Ultra Unlock: Water Festival runs from Tuesday, August 18 at 10:00 a.m. to Monday, August 24, 2026 at 8:00 p.m. local time. This one exists because trainers cleared 30 hourly Global Challenges during July’s GO Fest 2026: Global weekend — and the reward is the Pokémon GO debut of two Galar-region Water-types: Arrokuda and Cramorant.

What’s new: Arrokuda and Cramorant

Both species originally debuted in the Galar region games, and Pokémon GO has been steadily filling in Galar’s Pokédex gaps over the past couple of years — this event covers two more entries from that generation’s water routes. Arrokuda is a small, fast Water-type that evolves into Barraskewda at 25 Candy — a glass-cannon attacker with high Attack and low bulk that’s more of a novelty catch than a raid or PvP priority right now. Cramorant is the more interesting addition: a pure Water-type that, in the mainline games, has a well-known gimmick where it swallows Arrokuda or Pikachu and can launch them at opponents as a move called Gulp Missile. Pokémon GO doesn’t currently implement that ability, so in-game Cramorant functions as a standard single-stage species with average stats — but the flavor connection to Arrokuda debuting in the same event is a nice touch. Both are worth grabbing during the debut week for the Pokédex entry and the guaranteed availability — species availability for newly-released Pokémon tends to drop once their debut event ends.

Why it’s called an “Ultra Unlock”

Ultra Unlock events are Niantic’s way of rewarding community-wide participation from GO Fest weekends without making every trainer show up live to unlock them. During GO Fest 2026: Global in July, ticket holders worked through hourly Global Challenges in three-hour blocks; hitting 30 successful challenges over the weekend locked in Water Festival for everyone, ticket holder or not, a month later in August. It’s the same system that’s about to deliver Mega Starmie on August 22 at the 45-challenge threshold.

Boosted shiny rates and escalating bonuses

Expect increased shiny odds for a themed pool of Water-type Pokémon throughout the week, plus the escalating catch bonuses that have become standard for Ultra Unlock events — the more trainers catch collectively during the event window, the better the bonuses get as the week goes on. A fresh GO Pass also launches alongside the event with its own Timed Research track.

How it overlaps with the rest of August

Water Festival’s back half overlaps directly with Ultra Unlock: Super Mega Raid Day on August 22, meaning trainers will be juggling two live events simultaneously for a few days. A rough plan for that stretch:

• August 18–21: Focus on Water Festival — clear Timed Research, hunt Arrokuda and Cramorant, and bank Raid Passes for the weekend.
• August 22: Prioritize Mega Starmie raids during the dedicated Super Mega Raid Day window (11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. local time) — this is a one-day debut, unlike Water Festival’s full week.
• August 23–24: Wrap up any remaining Water Festival Research and catches before the event closes at 8:00 p.m. local time on the 24th.

Worth the time investment?

If you only have time for one part of this stretch, prioritize Mega Starmie on August 22 — new Mega Evolutions don’t get re-releases on a predictable schedule, while Arrokuda and Cramorant will almost certainly return in future Water-themed events. That said, if you’re a completionist or a Great League player looking to test Cramorant’s PvP viability early, the full Water Festival week is worth clearing start to finish.

Early PvP outlook for Cramorant and Barraskewda

Neither species is likely to shake up Great League or Ultra League rankings on debut. Barraskewda’s stat spread leans heavily offensive, which plays better in raids than in the shield-heavy meta of PvP, while Cramorant’s plain Water typing and average bulk put it behind established picks like Azumarill or Poliwrath for a defensive core. Both are worth testing in Little Cup or Great League lobbies for fun, but don’t bench your current Water-type roster expecting either one to be an upgrade.

A pattern worth watching

This is the second Ultra Unlock in a row tied directly back to a single GO Fest weekend’s Global Challenge results, and Niantic has leaned on the format more heavily in 2026 than in previous years. If that trend continues, expect future GO Fest events — including September’s Mega Finale — to keep using the same Global Challenge structure to schedule content drops weeks or months in advance, rather than announcing everything up front.

Should you buy anything from the shop this week?

Ultra Unlock events typically bring a modest in-game shop refresh alongside the new GO Pass — usually a themed avatar item or two, plus a discounted item bundle built around Incubators or Raid Passes. None of it is essential to catching Arrokuda or Cramorant, so treat the shop as optional unless a specific cosmetic catches your eye. The GO Pass itself, on the other hand, is worth checking even on the free tier, since it’s the fastest way to guarantee a Cramorant or Arrokuda encounter without relying purely on wild spawn luck.
